GTA VI Expectations: Is 30 FPS the New Standard at Launch?
04-02-2025
Excitement about the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI has surged to unprecedented levels, yet the expectations for its performance may need to be adjusted. As gamers looked forward to the capabilities of the next generation consoles, the promise of higher frame rates loomed large. Unfortunately, recent insights suggest that this much-anticipated title may not achieve the 60 frames per second that many had hoped for at launch.
According to insights shared by a former animator associated with Rockstar, we might be facing a reality where Grand Theft Auto VI launches at only 30 frames per second. This revelation originates from a private video where the animator discussed the current state of the game’s development.
The animator speculated that the title would not reach 60 frames per second unless it leveraged advanced technology, such as artificial intelligence upscaling techniques, like those utilized by the PlayStation. The notion was put forward that achieving 60 frames out of the box on standard consoles such as the PS5 may not be feasible, although it could potentially occur on upgraded models.
While the animator has not been with Rockstar since 2017 and lacks current knowledge of the inner workings of the studio, he emphasized that the team is known for maximizing the performance of their games. He suggested that the focus would initially be on delivering an exceptional gaming experience at 30 frames per second, with future updates aimed at optimizing performance.
Currently, Grand Theft Auto VI is anticipated for release in 2025, exclusively for the Xbox Series X/S along with the PlayStation 5, causing enthusiasts eager but perhaps tempering their expectations regarding performance at launch.
